Description
A traditional style icon commemorating the canonization of Junipero Serra. He is shown holding a cross as a symbol of his work as an evangelist in the New World and a representation of the Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo, in Carmel, California, where is entombed.
Junipero Serra was a Franciscan friar who was responsible for founding the first nine of the 21 Spanish missions stretching from San Diego to San Francisco. The primary purpose of the mission was to spread the faith to the natives of the New World.
Several generations after his death, the descendants of the natives who knew him personally, still revered relics associated with him, thought of him as their protector, and referred to him as "el Santo," the saint.
